Here's a great illustration by George Perez early in his career...
I believe this was in one of the first books on Perez, Accent On The First E! It was around the time he was working at Marvel in the 1970s, before he went to DC Comics. And I noticed this recently on Capn's Comics blog!

Silver Surfer by Paul Smith
I recently discovered the blog of Paul Smith, one of my favorite artists of the 80s/90s...he's still doing great commissions and sketches!
Great inked piece here of Norrin Radd, very much inspired by John Buscema. Nuff Said!

Silver Surfer and Galactus by Giorgio Comolo
An interesting piece by Giorgio Comolo featuring Galactus - sitting on a giant throne, almost petrified, with the Silver Surfer imploring him...to wake up?

Marvel Universe Commission by John Buscema
When I started this blog years ago I spent a lot of time finding images, rare commissions, old magazine covers, etc. I joined the Tumblr party this year - late to everything as usual - but I see so much fun stuff on there it's addictive.
This John Buscema commission is a wonderful piece of work. Featuring the Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, Conan, Red Sonja, Thor, the Vision, various Avengers and X-Men. From the signature it was done around 1998. Nuff Said.

Silver Surfer vs Super Skrull by Steve Rude
Shades of Jack Kirby! Steve Rude captures this battle perfectly between the Surfer and the Super Skrull.
I have abandoned this site mostly for Tumblr these days -- seems natural as this blog was always about images. But the above image just had to be added here for my Surfer collection. Nuff Said.

Silver Surfer Saturday: Marvel Slurpee Cup
The holy grail in comics collecting for me was a good copy of Silver Surfer #1 from 1968. The next best thing to collect? This Marvel Slurpee cup from 1975. I recently was able to get one.
The classic logo and a dashing image by a Buscema adorn this fine cup. It's certainly not a Kirby pose, right? But where was this illustration taken from? A cover? A splash page? John or Sal? Perhaps from the Defenders which was published in the 70s?
No, it came from the lower right panel on page 4 from Silver Surfer #4, the issue where the Surfer fights Thor. John Buscema pencils, of course, but his brother Sal Buscema inked him. I thought they made a fine team but soon Sal became a dynamic penciller on his own.
The back of these cups had the characters in their civilian guises explaining their origin. In the Surfer's case, this is Norrin Radd. I really dig that part about mankind being ignorant. Kind of snooty, isn't he, that Norrin Radd? Nuff Said!

Silver Surfer 4 cover re-imagined by Yildiray Cinar
The most famous Silver Surfer cover of all time is issue #4, featuring the Surfer hurtling at Thor for a big fight. I found this re-take on that cover from Yildiray Cinar's DeviantArt page.
Cinar takes the same scene and twists the angles of both heroes to get a different perspective. Maybe it's just a few seconds later after the classic cover...
...so deftly drawn by Big Joh Buscema. Nuff Said!

Silver Surfer by Jack Kirby, Splash Page and Black Light poster from Fantastic Four #76
While perusing the latter issues of Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four run, I came across this classic splash page...
FF #76, page 6, featuring the Silver Surfer soaring in a moment of freedom.
There was a black light poster made out of this page. I did a quick search and found that it will see on eBay for over $100 now. Marvel fans of this era will remember the black light posters created around 1970 for stoners to enjoy while they listened to rock music. There were three Dr. Strange black light posters which I wrote about last year. I think I may have had one of these (although not the Surfer) next to a lava lamp. Nuff Said!

Silver Surfer by Marshall Rogers and Joe Rubinstein
After losing his own regular series in 1970, the Silver Surfer finally returned in 1987 with a series written by Steve Englehart and drawn by one of his best collaborators, Marshall Rogers.
The first issue featured this dynamic double page splash by Rogers and Joe Rubinstein, with the Surfer hurtling through space. The story would eventually allow Norrin Radd to break through the prison Galactus had placed around the Earth. I was a big fan of the Englehart/Rogers team and eagerly awaited their first Marvel project. This image knocked me out when I first saw it.
Here is the original artwork to this splash page, which I discovered a few months back on Tom Breevort's Marvel Age of Comics tumblr page. Interesting how all the creators actually signed the credits page when it was published. Nuff Said!

Silver Surfer Saturday: Barry Smith
Here's a little gem from the early career of Barry Smith...
Back when Smith's style was heavily influenced by Jack Kirby, this illustration of the Silver Surfer in space has all the hallmarks of the King's style. No idea what year this was from, but it's clearly pre-Conan! Nuff Said.

Silver Surfer and Galactus by Pat Broderick
One of my favorite artists from the 1980s was Pat Broderick. He did great work on Legion of Super-Heroes, Firestorm, Captain Atom and many other titles. I looked him up on Facebook the other day and found this piece!
The Surfer gliding through space with Galactus in the background. Please look up Pat Broderick on Facebook to see more great commissions! Nuff Said.

Silver Surfer Saturday: Surfer Team-Up with Black Racer, Flash from John Byrne
A couple of Silver Surfer team-ups with DC Comics, from John Byrne...
Silver Surfer and The Flash. Norrin Radd has no problem keeping up with Barry Allen in this scene. Could the Surfer, who probably travels at light speed, be fast enough to enter the Speed Force?
Silver Surfer and The Black Racer! Entirely appropriate since both characters were created by Jack Kirby. I always thought the Racer had a relationship to the Surfer because of their travel gimmick. Nuff Said.

Silver Surfer Saturday: Galactus and his Herald by Loston Wallace
Here is a 2002 piece by Loston Wallace, featuring Galactus and Norrin Radd. Don't you just love the Kirby Krackle dots framing them? I came across Loston's site via Twitter and he also has a great DeviantArt site, please check them out for commissions and other work. I've got some more illustrations by him lined up for next week.
