Merry Marvel Marching Society by Marie Severin

Here's a rarely seen gem that I found on a Facebook page, a Merry Marvel Marching society double page spread by Marie Severin!

Merry Marvel Marching UK

This was published in a UK comic and the original poster was able to digitally reattach them together. Probably mid to late 1960s when the MMM was still going? The Thing on drums, I like that, and Nick Fury on the saxophone. Not sure about Subby. Nuff Said!

Marvel Funnies: Marie Severin celebrates Dave Cockrum's birthday

Here is how Marie Severin celebrated Dave Cockrum's birthday in 2004...

With one of his favorite creations, Nightcrawler, toasting him, and drinking the rest of the X-Men under the table.  Nuff Said!

An Old-Fashioned Marvel Christmas by Marie Severin

I totally missed doing anything for Christmas here on Giant-Size Marvel, but this illustration fits in nicely.

Marvelmania 6 - Old Fashioned Christmas by Marie Severin

Marie Severin did this one for Marvelmania #6, way back in 1970.  Featuring her zany interpretation of all the Marvel heroes exploding out of a Christmas present.  Note that Conan the Barbarian is leaping off the left hand side!  Apparently this issue shipped just after Christmas--they missed their deadline and so did I.  Nuff Said!

Sub-Mariner 33 Cover Progression: From Marie Severin to Sal Buscema

Remember all the great classic Marvel covers from the late 1960s / early 1970s?  Some of them may not have been designed by the cover artist, but instead by Marie Severin!  Here is one such example, from Sub-Mariner #33, published in late 1971 / early 72.

Marie Severin Sub-Mariner #33 Cover Preliminary Original Art 1970

Marie's cover preliminary shows the basic design.  The notes on the right suggest the premise: Subby returns to Atlantis to find it in ruins...Krang and gang accuse him of being absent while they needed him.

Sub-Mariner 33 1971 original cover art by Sal Buscema

Sal Buscema's original art cover, to this issue, which recently sold for over $8K on Heritage Comics auction site.

Sub-Mariner 33 1971 color cover by Sal Buscema

The final color cover as it was originally published.  You can see that Marie's template was pretty much executed as designed, with certain elements really made stronger by Buscema: Namor's guilt and pensive pose, Krang's righteous and accusatory stance, the wounded Atlantean nursing a dislocated shoulder!

The modern comics companies don't produce covers like this anymore, which give you a disturbing idea about the hero and make you buy it to see how it happened.  If you want to see some other nifty examples of Marie Severin's Marvel cover designs, see this Newsarama blog post by Graeme McMillan.  Nuff Said!

Marie Severin versus the Marvel Superheroes

Here is a little gem I found on Heritage Comics, from Marie Severin in 1996!

Marie Severin - Self-Portrait With the Marvel Superheroes 1996

Mirthful Marie taking a picture of Marvel's superheroes, along with a couple of villains, too.  Apparently this was a signed and numbered print of 400 copies?  Marie colored it by herself.

Marie Severin - Self-Portrait With the Marvel Superheroes 1996 black and white

Here is the black and white edition.  I have no idea who sold this, are there any Marvel fans out there who bought this when it was published?  I think this piece is awesome and brings back all the fun memories of Not Brand Echh.   Nuff Said!

Marie Severin's 1997 Birthday Card for Stan Lee

If you were a Comics Buyer's Guide subscriber in 1997, you might have received this nifty issue featuring an awesome cover by Marie Severin for Stan Lee's birthday in 1997.

Marie Severin Stan Lee 1997 Birthday for Comics Buyers Guide 1258

Mirthful Marie packed this illustration with all the Marvel superstars plus a few from Brand Echh (DC).  Archie is sticking out his tongue in the lower left corner.

Yesterday, Stan Lee turned 90.  He has to be the most energetic 90 year old I've ever heard of, going around and still selling characters and promoting himself at different venues.  Nuff Said!
